Some of these formations include ones that look like butterflies, flowers, other plants, and the most popular and common formation is the wave formation which represents the ocean’s tide. The performers must get close together to create the images seamlessly. The only time there is not a group effort is at the beginning of the dance where a solo performer will open up her fan first to signal to the rest of the group to start the dance.
