Choreography

The movement and choreography of Buchaechum is very precise, yet it must be soft enough to be elegant. The foot work can be fast or slow, but it is always very grounded. The tempo of the footwork largely depends on the tempo of the music. It is important for the performers to be precise because they all work as a group. There are many formations that must be done at the perfect time to create the right image. Some of these formations include ones that look like butterflies, flowers, other plants, and the most popular and common formation is the wave formation which represents the ocean’s tide. The performers must get close together to create the images seamlessly. The only time there is not a group effort is at the beginning of the dance where a solo performer will open up her fan first to signal to the rest of the group to start the dance.
